A podiatry assistant has to handle both the medical and administrative ends of a facility. Assisting podiatrists with examination and surgical procedures and handling scheduling and records management work are the two main areas that podiatry assistants work.
2. What do you know about diseases related to feet? Can you give a short overview?
Our feet are the most neglected parts of our bodies. Many of us often face issues like ingrown toenails, bunions, calluses, and warts, putting us in quite a quandary because it is impossible to move around if your feet are not fully functional. In addition to this, conditions such as diabetes can play havoc with our feet, leading to dire consequences at times.
3. How important do you think patient education is?
Patient education is extremely important because the more that patients know about foot hygiene and care, the lesser their chances of suffering from a problem associated with it.
4. What is the most difficult thing that you have done in this role?
I was once assisting a podiatrist and orthopedic doctor in treating a 5-year-old girl who had managed to fracture almost every bone in her body due to a genetic condition. I must say that this was the most challenging time in my career.
5. As far as patient management is concerned on an administrative level, what duties have you performed?
Apart from handling patient scheduling and follow-up duties, I have been involved in managing patients’ records, verifying insurance coverage information, and ensuring that copays are properly calculated and processed.
6. What are your future career plans?
Eventually, I would like to get training as a podiatrist and work in a dedicated foot care facility.
