In the past, cover letters for production worker were simple; you told the prospective employer that you’d sent them your resume and to please accept it.
You put everything in an envelope, posted it, and started waiting for the prospective employer to contact you. And sometimes you didn’t even write a cover letter.
You just dropped off your resume and considered it a job well done.
It’s not that simple anymore. It has become imperative to add a cover letter to your initial communication with the prospective employer because what you are doing in a cover letter is telling him what you can do for him.
And that’s what makes it different from a resume: a resume focuses on the past, and a cover letter focuses on the future. In a cover letter, you are matching your skills to the job description. In effect, you are telling the employer that his company will grow and prosper with you in it, so he should hire you as soon as possible.
And how do you do this? In three words: do your homework. Research the organization the job advertisement belongs to. Find out not only what they do, but the direction they’re going in. Only then can you tailor your skills to match their plans.
