Position Overview

Carpet installers are those important professionals without whom our carpeting needs may never be fulfilled completely.

Despite the popular belief, not everyone can install carpets. We may be able to install one on our own but the finishing will probably not good. Carpet installers are usually asked to come in and provide their input for large carpeting projects.

If you are thinking of installing a carpet in your child’s room, you may be able to do it yourself. But if it is a large expanse of the floor that needs to be covered, you will have to ask a carpet installer to do it for you.

If working as a carpet installer is what you want to do, here is a list of duties that you will be expected to perform on any typical day:

• Consult with clients to determine their carpet installation needs
• Provide customers with information on available carpet types
• Suggest the types of carpets that are suitable for each project
• Look through floor plans to determine the dimensions of the area
• Ensure the availability of corresponding carpet rolls and materials
• Clear work areas of trash and debris
• Rip out any old carpeting or flooring while ensuring that no damage is don’t to the floor
• Plan carpet layouts by paying special attention to expected traffic patterns and aesthetics
• Roll out carpet rolls and mark them according to the measurements of floor plans
• Cut carpets to fit designated areas and use glue or tape to firmly install them in place
• Join edges of carpets and seam edges using heated carpet irons or tapes and glues
• Measure, cut, and install carpet strips along baseboards of wall edges
• Nail tack strips and cut carpet padding to size before installing it in a predefined manner
• Finish the carpet properly by trimming away or cutting any irregular areas

Carpet Installer Educational Requirements

Working as a carpet installer does not require any formal education, except a high school diploma.

Carpet Installer Skills and Abilities

The ability to read and write and decipher floor plans is of the utmost importance in this job.

Also, it is important for carpet installers to be physically dexterous – stooping and bending is all in a day’s work for them.

Another reason that physical dexterity is so important in this job is the fact that carpet installers often work long shifts.
