A background in technology, with a certification in fiber optics, is required if you want to work as a fiber optics technician. You will need to possess an analytic mind and have it in you to be able to handle and troubleshoot problems.
Working at this position means that you will have to work out in the field for a major part of your day, so you have to be okay with working in extreme and unpredictable weather conditions. In this role, you will be setting up, troubleshooting, and maintaining fiber optic systems in business, private, and other capacities, depending on where you are stationed.

• Build and test pre-terminated fiber optic cable assemblies, and terminate and splice them as required.
• Handle customer premise installations, including framing, cabling, bonding, and grounding.
• Install, troubleshoot, and maintain fiber optic systems in client environments such as schools, businesses, and homes.
• Measure the signal strength of TVs, telephones, and Internet connections, aimed at ensuring that there is adequate performance.
• Create sensors, and perform required inspections to ensure that fiber optic systems do not have defects.
• Conduct regular inspections of all assigned fiber optic systems to ensure that they remain in good working order.
• Perform regular and preventative maintenance on fiber optics systems, aimed at ensuring that breakdown events are few and far between.
• Perform premises cabling and running fiber optic cable underground, and underwater.
• Inspect fiber routes and hub sites, and ensure that all attended sites are clearly labeled.
• Restore any broken links within provided timelines to ensure minimum service downtime.
• Create and maintain documentation on work performed, and ensure that project statuses are communicated to the supervisor.
