Prior to creating a resume to apply for a motorcycle mechanic position, you must know exactly what the position entails. A motorcycle mechanic is probably the first person you will meet when you go to have your motorcycle, moped, scooter or ATV fixed or examined. The mechanic will ask you questions about your vehicle and then inspect it to determine what problems you are facing and how they can be fixed.
Working as a motorcycle mechanic requires a high school diploma or GED at the very least. Although there are no formal education requirements for this position, it is imperative to possess great mechanical aptitude and be able to work on different types of 2 and 3 wheeled vehicles. You will need to know how engines work on motorcycles and what possible problems could arise.
As a motorcycle mechanic, you will need to be able to perform both general and preventative maintenance on a variety of motorcycles. Diagnosing problems with transmissions and troubleshooting issues with knocking and shimmying will be all in a day’s work for you. You will also be required to make cost estimates for both repair, replacement and maintenance work, and possess the ability to confer / deal with clients in a satisfactory manner.
Typical duties of a motorcycle mechanic include:
• Interview clients to determine their motorcycle repair and maintenance requirements
• Inspect motorcycles, mopeds, scooters and ATVs to determine issues with engines, transmissions and frames
• Provide clients with cost information for each repair and / or maintenance procedure and provide timelines for delivery
• Perform detailed diagnostic activities to determine problems with engines and provide feedback to clients
• Mount, balance and check vehicle conditions and adjust components according to specifications
• Replace defective parts by using hand and power tools and arbor presses and replace worn, damaged or defective mechanical parts
• Repair or replace parts such as headlights, horns, handlebar controls and mufflers by employing mechanical skills
• Dismantle engines and repair or replace parts such as magnetos and generators
• Connect test panels and equipment to engines and measure generator input and ignition timing
• Remove cylinder heads, grind valves and scrape off carbon, along with replacing defective valves and pistons
• Use hammers to manage dents and bends in frames and assist painters in determining paint hues
• Reassemble subassembly units and disassemble them to examine conditions and movement of parts
• Perform both preventative and regular maintenance on motorcycles, scooters and mopeds according to manufacturers’ instructions
