Flagger Qualifications
A high school diploma or a GED equivalent is usually sufficient to work as a flagger. Prior experience as an apprentice in a construction capacity can prove to be helpful in assisting you to acquire a job as a flagger.
At this position, you will be on your feet most of the day, which is why it is imperative that you are physically dexterous and strong. Also, it is essential for flaggers to be able to perform their work excellently, even when the weather is inclement.
As far as skills are concerned, flaggers need to possess exceptional knowledge of directing traffic, ability to communicate diversion information, and comprehension of traffic rules and laws. In cases where disobedient drivers are faced, it is important for a flagger to ensure that he or she records incident information, and reports it to the authorities, as per protocol.

• Assist construction workers in clearing work sites, by removing debris and hazardous materials.
• Provide support in performing basic construction and repair work on assigned sites.
• Select the right types of boards and warning signs required for the assigned site, and transport them to the site area.
• Ensure that all signs that need to be put up are clearly painted with the required information.
• Erect traffic control and diversion signs at the appropriate places, ensuring that they are placed so that they don’t move due to the wind or passing traffic.
• Place traffic cones around construction areas, in a bid to warn drivers about work in progress.
• Assist in creating diversions and putting up signs that point to diversions, to ensuring that drivers do not lose their way.
• Respond to drivers’ or the general public’s questions regarding diversions and construction work.
• Place barricades around areas that need to be cordoned off, and ensure that reflector stickers are placed on them.
• Collect and put away all cones, barricades, and signboards as soon as the construction work ends.
