A bellman works at the front end of a hotel, which is why it is essential that they perform their work well.

And this is precisely why one needs to prepare well for the interview process to hire.

As a bellman, it is imperative that you know the work inside out, so that you can answer interview questions intelligently.

During the interview process, an applicant for a bellman position will be judged on their ability to transport guest luggage, and assist in the check-in and check-out processes.

Customer service abilities will also be checked by the interviewer since the bellman has to be in constant contact with guests.

1. Tell me about yourself.

I have worked as a bellman for more than a year. I had always wanted to work in the hospitality industry, and this seemed the right first step.

2. Why do you want to work for our hotel particularly?

I am particularly interested in working for your hotel as I want to work for an organization that truly cares for its customer base. Since your hotel has a great reputation for this, I would want to work for you, so that I can learn customer services more, and apply my skills in it.

3. Tell me a little about the work that you have performed in a bellman position.

During the time that I have worked as a bellman, I have been performing many duties such as greeting guests and retrieving luggage. In addition, I am responsible for escorting guests to their rooms and explaining room facilities. Moreover, I am in charge of transporting guests’ luggage to their rooms and ensuring that it is safely handled.

4. What skills do you possess which make you an excellent person to hire as a bellman?

I am well-versed in consistently offering professional and friendly services to guests and visitors. I am also competent in assisting guests by providing them with information on facilities, and safety policies. Furthermore, I am exceptionally talented in baggage handling and providing excellent hospitality services to guests.

5. How do you handle adversity at the workplace?

Usually, there is little or no room for adversity in the position that I am working in. However, when such a situation does occur, I make sure that I resolve it immediately so that it does not convert into an altercation or a fight.

6. How do you feel about working in a position where you have to be on your feet at all times?

I am quite comfortable in my role as a bellman. It is true that one has to be on one’s feet most of the day, but one does get breaks when guests are not arriving or checking out. And that is enough to rest for a bit before the next haul needs to be handled.

7. Why should we hire you?

I feel that I am the best person to hire because I have been working in a similar position. And since I am experienced in this area, you won’t need to spend time and precious resources to further train me.

8. What are your weaknesses?

Sometimes I feel that I am never satisfied with my work. As in, I want to keep doing better. This makes it difficult for me to realize that I am actually doing quite well, and don’t really need to push myself unnecessarily.

9. What are your biggest strengths?

My main strength includes high-end customer service abilities. I know exactly how to provide excellent services to guests and visitors, and can effectively ensure guest satisfaction.

10. What is the biggest challenge of working as a bellman?

Bellmen need to be in a constant state of guest pleasing. And this is the most difficult part of working as a bellman.

11. How do you overcome this challenge?

Since I am service-oriented, it is not difficult for me to ensure guest satisfaction. I make sure that I provide them with excellent services throughout their stay.

12. How do you handle work pressure?

I do not feel pressured by work. I feel that if I need to do something, I need to do it – there are no two ways about it.

13. What do you like most about this work?

Interacting with new people on a daily basis is something that I enjoy immensely, and working as a bellman provides me with that opportunity.

14. How do you feel about working back-to-back shifts?

I am not afraid of working overtime, or on back-to-back shifts. If there is extra work, or if I need to fill in for another bellman, I am always the first person to offer my services.

15. Do you like to work individually, or in a team environment?

I don’t mind working either way, as I am equally good at working individually, and in a team environment.

16. Why do you want to leave your present job?

I wouldn’t want to leave my present job had the management not changed. The new management now wants to hire their own team. Even though I am quite sure that I will not be laid off, as I am vital to their front-end operations, I would like to move on to a more secure job, and one where I can learn more.

17. How did you hear about this opening?

I was in conversation with a friend who works at your hotel and was telling him about my current work situation. He mentioned that there was an open position for a bellman here, and encouraged me to apply.

18. If we choose to hire you, when can you begin working for us?

I have to give 45 days’ notice of my intent to leave, after which I can join you.

19. Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

Eventually, I want to work in a housekeeping manager capacity, for which I want to start training soon.

Yes, I would like to know the strength of your frontend team, and how you manage to keep them motivated.
