Holding a pivotal role in the healthcare industry, radiology technicians assist in the diagnosis of disease or condition in patients.
They are usually part of the healthcare team in a hospital setting and work with patients who have been admitted due to acute injuries or diseases.
Additionally, they work with patients who have conditions such as rheumatism and arthritis.
Radiology technicians take their orders from doctors – they refer to prescriptions or doctors’ orders to determine what type of x-rays need to be performed. They ensure that the right type of radiograph is being performed on the right patient and that the patient is positioned properly.
Skills and Knowledge
It is important for radiology technicians to possess skills in operating x-ray machines and maintaining them as well.
They need to have some basic medical knowledge as they often need to talk to patients to determine the intensity of pain that they are suffering from.
As part of their work, they need to be able to understand how MRI and CT scan machines work.
Education
To work as a radiology technician, it is important to possess an associate’s degree in radiology. They should also be licensed as a radiology technician in the state that they intend to work in.

• Refer to doctor’s orders to perform x-rays, MRIs and CT scans
• Explain procedures to patients prior to positioning them
• Educate patients about what to expect during a diagnostic procedure
• Provide patients with information on the duration of each procedure
• Position patients on the examination tables to ensure that body parts that need to be x-rayed are set forth
• Observe patients during scans to ensure their comfort and safety and determine any signs of visible distress
• Perform scans according to doctors’ instructions to look for diseases or injuries
• Position scanning equipment and adjust controls to set exposure time and distance
