A resignation letter often requires to give sufficient notice to the employer.

But some circumstances dictate that we resign on an immediate basis.

In fact, an illness or immediate joining of another company are two of the most common reasons for immediate resignation.

While the latter may not be looked at favorably by an employer, the former reason can give an employer no right to refuse.

A resignation letter that requires an employee to resign with immediate effect due to poor health is easy to write.

In your letter, you do not need to mince your words to justify the situation – all you need to do is write the truth!

The following is an example of a resignation letter that you can use to resign from a position with immediate effect because of an illness.

Dear Mr. Barlow:

It is with much regret that I inform you of my decision to resign immediately from my position as Account Manager for Hamilton Inc. As you know, I took a lot of time off from work due to numerous hospital visits. I believe that it is time to take a break as stress is a contributing factor to my illness.

Three weeks ago, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a diagnosis that has brought my life to a screeching halt. I enjoyed working at Hamilton Inc, and it feels quite odd to me that I will not be associated with the company in the future. While I am not ready for retirement as yet, I have no choice but to resign. During my hiatus, I intend to take this experimental drug for MS that my doctor has advised. I hope that I will be able to get back to work after a couple of years.

I understand that I need to provide notice of my intent to leave. Unfortunately, I am not well enough to work during the notice period which is why I have asked for an immediate release. Had the circumstances been slightly different, I would not have taken this hard decision.

I would appreciate it if you could arrange for my leaving documents as soon as possible as I am applying for my social security disability benefits this week. However, I will be available on an on-and-off basis if you would like me to train the person who will replace me.

Sincerely,

Paul Rock
