Simply writing a resignation letter is not enough – there is certain responsibility attached with writing one. Yes, you did read it correctly. Responsibility. You might think that resigning from a lecturer position means that you are letting go off responsibilities which is true in a sense. But when you leave, can you imagine the loose ends that you leave behind? Incomplete projects and students that look up to you for instruction are your responsibilities. In the latter case, responsibility is manifold as you may be breaking little hearts!
But if you must resign, then making sure that you fulfil all your obligations is very important. And all this starts with the resignation letter, where you chart out specifically how you intend to handle your responsibilities.
Resignation letters are usually a last connection to an employer and you have to leave on a positive note, so it is important to make sure that you do this correctly. Saying goodbye to an employer can be heart-rending especially if you are a teacher / lecturer and your students love you. You will have to make arrangements for someone to fill in for you or provide a notice so that someone can be arranged to replace you.

Dear Ms. Mendiz:
Working as an English Literature lecturer at New York State University for the previous 15 years was a wonderful experence. But I feel that it is time for me to move on now due to some personal reasons. Please accept this letter as a formal resignation from my position; August 12, 2015 will be my last day at work.
As the years have flown by, I have realized that it is important to live next to family which is why I am moving in with my daughter in Mauldin, SC and have accepted a part time position at the Mauldin College. Before I leave, I would like to recommend Ms. Janice Cooper as my replacement. She has worked as a teaching aide with me for some time and knows the intricacies of teaching English Literature. However, if you have someone else in mind, please let me know so that I can discuss the course covered till now with him or her.
New York State University has provided me with the best years of my career and I couldn’t be more thankful to you for this opportunity. I will be in touch with the HR department to acquire my dues and leaving documents and would appreciate it if you would put in a word for me so that this can be expedited.
Thank you very much.
