Position Overview
A picture framer may work independently or with an organization that deals in arts and crafts. The basic work of a picture framer is to frame pictures! But it is not as easy as it sounds.
Handling picture framing work requires a lot of skill and expertise, as it is imperative not to damage the pictures that one is handling. Also, a lot of picture framers perform restoration work on old pictures and crafts, which is why they have to be meticulous in what they do.
Position Requirements
Formal education is not required to work as a picture framer, but you do need a high school diploma or a GED equivalent if you want to work in this capacity.
In addition to this, you need to be exceptionally good with your hands, and be able to ensure that the end product is exactly as it is expected to be.
The ability to set up and operate woodworking and wood stock machines is of great necessity in this work, and you have to be exceptionally talented in handling equipment that performs restoration work as well.
Furthermore, you will need to be well-versed in handling the application of varnish, shellac, lacquer, stains, and paint to frames and mounts, and ensure that finishing and waxing is properly managed.

• Meet clients to determine their picture, mirror, and crafts framing requirements.
• Study items that need to be framed, and provide clients with advice on appropriate solutions.
• Provide clients with information on possible framing and restoration timelines and costs.
• Extract pictures from old frames, making sure that they are not torn or damaged, and place them carefully in new ones.
• Remove old finishes by stripping using steel wool and glass paper, and by applying solvents and paint strippers.
• Place pictures in new frames or on mounts, and ensure that they are safely and properly affixed on them.
• Fit and fasten frame pieces and mount backing materials and subjects for framing purposes.
• Set up and operate woodworking and wood stock machines to ensure that proper framing solutions are carried out.
• Place the glass on top of framed pictures, ensuring that it is properly affixed, leaving no room for falling out.
• Cut cardboard pieces and ensure that it is properly fit into the frame, to keep pictures steady and safe.
