Child Advocate Interview Questions and Answers

1. What is the most challenging part of working as a child advocate?

The fact that there are children involved is challenging enough. One has to work with a toothcomb to make sure that they do not come in harm’s way, and that appropriate measures are taken to keep them comfortable and safe.

2. Why did you take up the work of a child advocate?

I have always been interested in social work, especially where child welfare is concerned. A degree in social services, along with an inherent will to help children and families cope with problems such as abuse and neglect forced me to take up this work. I have not looked back since then.

3. What specific duties have you been performing as a child advocate?

While working as a child advocate, I have been responsible for assessing my clients’ situations, gauging threats to them, creating and implementing plans to avert them, providing advocacy in front of services and courts, and providing counseling to them to ensure their physical and mental/emotional well-being.

4. Tell us of one skill that you deem extremely important while working as a child advocate?

I believe that the ability to handle crisis intervention activities in a proper manner is one of the main skills that a child advocate needs in order to be truly successful in this work.

5. Have you ever been in a situation where you had to exercise this skill?

Several times. Quite recently, I was assigned a child abuse case, where the parents were accused of harming their only son. The problem was that there was no evidence. During an assessment session, the father flew into a rage and almost hit the child. I intervened just in time and saved the situation from getting too tricky. It was quite a harrowing experience.

6. What makes you a good choice to hire as a child advocate?

Apart from knowing the process of child advocacy inside out, I am great at handling counseling sessions and arranging external support services for my clients. In addition to this, my capabilities in managing tricky situations are profound, and I can manage a hotline phone in a prompt and positive manner.
