A music director is hired by film production companies, television and radio channels, and theaters to provide them with help and leadership in handling their music needs.

Music directors may work in one or more areas depending on what type of organization or environment they are a part of.

The basic work of a music director is to make sure that the right type of musicians and performers are acquired so that they can provide the right mix of music to the audience.

Working as a music director is a lot of hard work as you have to wrack your brains constantly to come up with new melodies, compositions, and lyrics, in addition to acquiring talented individuals and training them for musical journeys.

Position Requirements

To be considered eligible to work as a music director, one has to possess a formal degree in music from an accredited college or university.

• Confer with client organizations to determine the type of music that they require for their events or promotional gimmicks.

• Provide suggestions on the pace and pitch of music compositions that best suit clients’ needs.

• Develop compositions and melodies and ensure that they are run by clients for approval.

• Audition candidates for music ensembles and ensure that they are provided with required training once hired.

• Handle details of musical events such as location securing and musical rehearsals coordination.

• Study event details to determine the type of music score required for it, and acquire licenses to use background music.

• Use predefined gestures to shape the music being played, in a bid to communicate the required tempo, pitch, and volume of musical pieces.

• Work with administrative staff to coordinate artistic activities, and handle music copyright work.

• Coordinate and organize musical tours both locally and internationally, ensuring that all logistics are properly coordinated.

• Assist music production staff in determining the path of scores and provide suggestions in handling tracking and mixing work.

• Engage the services of composers to write scores according to the requirements of each musical project
