Athletic Director Interview Questions and Answers

What was your journey to the position of an athletic director?
10 years ago, I began working as a coach in a small school. I have come a long way since then, having now gathered enough experience to lead a team of coaches and employees of an athletics department. I have been working as an athletic director for 4 years now.

Do you feel that you may be saturated in this job since there is no obvious way to move upward?
Not at all. In fact, there is a lot of room to move, even if it isn’t in an upward direction. Where my work is concerned, saturation is not something that I let in, as I am able to find further opportunities within my line of work.

What are 2 of the main duties of a person working as an athletic director?
Creating, developing, and implementing core athletics programs, to meet the diverse needs of student-athletes is one of the most important duties of an athletic director. In addition to this, mentoring and leading coaches is an exceptionally important duty of a person working at this position.

How do you feel about working in a position which is so demanding, both physically, and mentally?
I enjoy my work immensely, and since I knew the physical and mental demands of this work before I opted to go on this path, I am comfortable with the whole business.

What has been your best achievement so far?
My team qualified for the finals of a rugby match, on an international level last year. At the time, I was not sure that my team was cut out to handle the finals. However, with a great practice, we managed to win the final. Obtaining such a position, when I was not confident about my abilities to lead, was probably the best surprise ever – and my highest accomplishment.

What is the one thing that you ensure each day, before the day’s trials begin?
Motivating my teams, and the staff members at the athletics department are the norm for me. I believe this makes the day more “manageable” for them.
