Youth Program Coordinator Job Description and Duties

A youth program coordinator (as opposed to a youth counselor) provides limited onsite counseling to members. Their basic work is to ensure the coordination of different programs to include youngsters within the community so that they become productive.

As a youth program coordinator, you will need to be on your feet constantly. Interacting with children and teenagers on a daily basis is a given since you will need to determine their requirements in terms of needs and interests.

You will also need to be in constant contact with funding agencies to acquire funds to run each project or module that you are assigned to.

Needless to say, your communication and people skills need to be perfect! Additionally, you will have to possess great team-building and decision-making skills as you will come across many incidents where your mettle as a “people person” will be put to the test.

Educational requirements to work as a youth program coordinator include a degree in communications, public administration or political sciences – if you have held a job or volunteered in a similar position before, you will be given great consideration.

On a typical day as a youth program coordinator, you will perform some or all of the job duties given below:

• Engage children and young adults in conversation to determine their needs and interests.
• Develop trusting relationships with both youth and their families by using an asset-based and trauma-informed approach.
• Design, develop and implement dedicated youth programs to meet the varying needs of the youth.
• Plan and facilitate all program activities to meet the individual needs of the participants.
• Provide literacy intervention materials and resources to members of educational programs.
• Assist members in developing social and life skills through positive role-modeling and learning activities.
• Partner with community organizations to provide enrichment and cultural identity activities.
• Determine the need for personnel for each program or module and lead hiring and training activities.
• Create awareness of available activities by developing and implementing outreach programs.
• Coordinate community relations campaigns to promote youth programs.
• Create and maintain effective relationships with local and regional organizations to obtain funding and support.
• Prepare and administer budgets for each youth program and ensure that all activities are managed within the budget.
• Conduct staff training programs to ensure that all staff is on the same page regarding the achievement of program objectives.
