To work as a day care assistant, one has to possess an inherent love for children. Some facilities may even want you to hold a professional training in childcare.

 

Education

A high school diploma or a GED equivalent is sufficient to work as a day care assistant. Apart from this, you need to be compassionate, patient, and highly insightful.

• Confer with parents to determine their specific child care requirements

• Engage children in conversation or play to make them comfortable

• Obtain information from parents regarding problems such as allergies, limitations, and illnesses

• Provide personal care to children, including bathing, toileting, grooming, and washing

• Change diapers, and ensure that soiled ones are properly disposed of

• Teach manners and good behavior to children

• Help children in learning basic skills such as communication and sharing

• Assist children in discovering new interests by introducing them to art, music, and sports

• Provide guidance on discipline and behavior

• Monitor all assigned children to ensure their physical and emotional safety

• Provide emergency care during accidents, injuries, and sicknesses

• Administer medication approved by parents as and when necessary

• Prepare children to enter the next care level

• Create and maintain records of assigned children in a confidential manner

• Observe children’s activities, and assist them when necessary

• Create logs of daily observations, and issues

• Read to children, and engage them in educational play

• Prepare food for children in order to help meet their dietary and nutrition requirements

• Organize toys and educational materials in proper way

• Sterilize feeding bottles, and make formula on schedule

• Assist children with homework and school projects

• Ensure constant and consistent cleanliness and sanitization of play areas

• Teach children how to fend for themselves

• Recognize inappropriate behavior and intervene as necessary

• Ensure a consistently safe environment for assigned children
