Animal Caretaker Interview Questions and Answers

Why did you opt to work as an animal caretaker?
I have a particular affinity with animals – they love me and I adore them! This inherent love for animals and their wellbeing is what led me to work as an animal caretaker.

What duties have you performed in the role of an animal caretaker in the past?
As an animal caretaker, I have been busy providing personal care to animals by ensuring that they are appropriately groomed and given proper meals on time. In addition to this, I have been busy cleaning living spaces of assigned animals, ensuring that the right sanitary practices are followed, and have also monitored them for signs of illnesses or discomfort.

In your opinion, what skills does one need to successfully work as an animal caretaker?
There is no way that you can be successful at working as an animal caretaker if you do not love them inherently. It is not something that you can learn to do. The ability to show compassion and love to animals assigned to you is foremost. One needs to be knowledgeable about performing grooming and bathing activities, and it is imperative to be able to train animals to obey, or behave in a particular manner, as instructed.

Do you find the work challenging sometimes?
The work is challenging every day, as you never know what the deal is unless you look closely at a situation. And situations pop up every day – such as illnesses, unruly behavior, and the likes of it.

How do you overcome these challenges?
I do not over think, and that helps a lot. Where animals are concerned, you have to take their lead at times, to make sure that they do what you want them to do.

What is the most challenging thing that you have had to deal with while working as an animal caretaker?
Last year, I was asked to provide care to a dog who was at the end of this life, due to a tumor that he had in his head. He was such a lovable animal, who gave me a great deal of love for five months before he passed away. It was tough to let go, and come to terms with this loss.
