Position Overview

A telephone technician works for telecom and support companies.

He or she is required to help customers/subscribers by making sure that they receive optimum service at all times.

 

The work can only be performed well if you possess the knowledge of complex telecommunication systems.

As a telephone technician, you will be performing many work duties, such as serving as an advisor on technical telecom issues and analyzing telecom architecture. Troubleshooting will also be an area that you will have to handle well.

Educational and Experience Requirements

Even though you need just a high school diploma or a GED equivalent to work as a telephone technician, prior experience is necessary.

If you have worked in this capacity before, you will be considered a great person to hire. If not, you will be trained on the job.

However, you do need to possess some information about the work, such as the ability to install telephone lines, and PABX systems, as well as maintain them properly.

Telephone Technician Job Description

• Confer with supervisors in order to determine installation activities that need to be managed.

• Inspect sites to figure out the mechanics of installation, and layouts.

• Determine the various ways in which telephone systems can be installed.

• Create an initial work plan for each installation.

• Acquire tools, equipment, and resources from different vendors in order to perform system installation work.

• Perform installation work by following set standards.

• Act as a liaison and advisor on technical issues related to telecommunications work.

• Explore strategies that will reduce the cost of installation, repair, and maintenance.

• Assist in the implementation of VoIP and traditional telecommunication systems service and support.

• Communicate with customers in order to determine their specific problems with telephones and VoIP systems.

• Perform complex troubleshooting on communications systems.

• Install, test, maintain, and repair telephone systems.

• Check installed systems in order to ensure that they remain in good working order.

• Respond to requests for troubleshooting, and obtain initial information over the phone.

• Ensure that an installation diagram is prepared for each customer.

• Install telecommunication networks, as well as standalone telephone lines.

• Ensure that codes, legal regulations, and standards are followed on a constant basis.

• Create and maintain logs and charts of performed work processes, and complaints.

• Verify that service is properly working, by testing circuits, alarms, and equipment.
