Position Overview

A mail handler may work in the private or the public sector, depending on his or her specific placement.

No matter which setting he or she works in, the work remains more or less the same. The main work of a mail handler is to ensure that mail, such as parcels, letters, and packages are properly handled, and reach their destinations safely.

 

Position Requirements

Usually, a high school diploma or a GED equivalent is sufficient to work as a mail handler.

If you have had some prior experience in this regard, you will be considered a good person to hire.

 

Skills & Abilities

Where skills are concerned, it is imperative for a mail handler to be physically fit, as he or she often has to lift and carry heavy objects.

Attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills are an absolute must when working at this position.

Additionally, it is important to be able to work on your feet for long periods of time.

By no means is the work of a mail handler easy. In fact, people working in this position often face challenges that they have to overcome.

Mail Handler Job Description (Duties and Responsibilities)

• Unload and load mail trucks and vans with incoming and outgoing mail.

• Separate mail received from trucks according to recipient information.

• Ensure that separated mail is placed in correct boxes or conveyor belts.

• Empty sacks or pouches of mail in order to determine recipient information.

• Check each mail item to ensure that correct information and stamps are placed on it.

• Operate sorting machinery and ensure that they are properly maintained as well.

• Greet customers and respond to their queries regarding incoming and outgoing mail.

• Assist customers to determine the right amount of stamps to put on each item.

• Operate weighing machines in order to determine the weight of each item.

• Properly route incoming mail so that it reaches its destination in a timely manner.

• Prepare large batches of mail to be dispatched to destinations.

• Cancel postage by feeding letters into electric canceling machines.

• Operate and maintain office machines related to mailing processes, such as envelop sealers, postage meters, and letter openers.

• Sort incoming money orders, and ensure that they are paid out in a timely manner.

• Create and maintain accurate and complete records of incoming and outgoing mail.

• Ensure the cleanliness and neatness of all customer areas within the postal office.
