Position Overview

RN supervisors wear coats of many colors. While they are responsible for providing direct patient care, they are also required to handle nurse staffing issues.

They oversee the day to day coordination of nursing services for a particular patient unit.

 

They make sure that patients are provided with the best possible care and that there is staff available to look after their needs on a constant basis.

It is very important for RN supervisors to possess supervisory acumen – not every nurse is capable of supervising a spectrum of nurses within a hospital, so it is important to know that you can take on this responsibility before you actually apply for an RN supervisor position.

Since you will be working as a guide, you will need to be authoritative and be able to relate to your staff positively.

Additionally, you will be required to handle distressing situations with tact and ensure that all functions of your patient unit run smoothly.

 

In addition to this, RN supervisors are responsible for organizing patient records, filling in for absent staff and handling patient complaints.

Position Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in nursing is a typical requirement to be eligible for this position – some experience in a similar supervisory role may also come in handy.

• Coordinate efforts with the head nurse or nurse manager to ensure appropriate staffing of nurses and support staff

• Sever as the administrative authority for the nursing unit by handling admissions and discharges

• Handle patients’ files and logs and ensure that each patient file is recorded properly

• Assist registered nurses in assessing diseases and injuries and create care plans accordingly

• Provide direct care to patients such as administering medication, handling bandages and inserting catheters

• Oversee the recruitment and training for nurses and administrative staff by ensuring that they can meet the facility standards

• Provide orientation to recently hired nurses to acquaint them with the facility’s policies and protocols

• Assign caseloads to nurses and follow up on treatment provided to assigned patients

• Schedule each nurse’s hours, assign nursing duties and fill in for absent staff

• Educate patients and their families by engaging them in conversation and providing them with support during distressing times

• Inform patients’ families about nursing procedures, physical therapies, and home patient care

• Take blood sample for testing, follow up on test results and interpret test results

• Resolve patients’ complaints regarding their conditions or the care provided to them by taking prompt action

• Monitor patients to determine changes in response to medication and inform the concerned doctor immediately
