Recommendation Letter for High School Student Entering College

Updated on: October 28, 2021

A recommendation letter for a high school student is usually written by either the principal of the school or the lead class teacher.

If the student wants to enroll in a particular college program – like business or finance – he may need to ask his / her business or finance teacher at school to provide the reference.

If it is an overall recommendation that is required, a lead teacher can help.

Recommendation letters are “all praise” letters. They are designed to say nice things about the person they are being written for.

It is something universal – you cannot write a recommendation letter in a negative tone, even if you know that the person you are writing it for, has a few, ahem, not-so-positive attributes.

If you cannot write good stuff, then simply refuse to write a recommendation letter.

Here is an example:

To Whom It May Concern

I am writing this reference letter at the request of Mark Rivera, who is applying for admission to your college. Mark has been my student for the previous three years at Rupert High School, and I have had the pleasure of getting to know him as a scholar, an athlete, and a person.

As a student, Mark can grasp quickly and accurately, even the most complex of concepts taught in class and takes his academic success very seriously. I have had the opportunity to oversee an educational program led by Mark, where he shone as an individual and in the process, made a mark for himself as a literary expert.

In an athletic capacity, he is highly competitive in all three sports (baseball, swimming, and riding) offered at our school. He maintains an excellent competitive balance and keeps his emotions in control. As an athlete, it is evident that he not only strives to win but enjoys the sport in its pure form.

Mark is a caring individual who is known for his ability to reach out to fellow students and his juniors in school. He gets along quite well with all his teachers and has not been the subject of any complaint.

I recommend Mark for your college program without any reservations, as I am confident that he will be at least as contributory to your alma mater, as he has been to ours. I can be reached at (888) 888-8888 if you require any further information.

Sincerely,

Amelia Banner, Lead Teacher
