Their work is to supervise activities at a terminal (usually where cargo is delivered) and make sure that all practices are carried out within the company’s protocol.

A primary responsibility of a terminal operator is to make sure that terminals are in good shape as far as cleanliness and maintenance are concerned.

They are also responsible for ensuring that the terminal area is safe and free from any hazards.

Skills and Abilities

It is essential for terminal operators to be able to operate equipment such as bulldozers and hoisting cranes since they may be expected to use these to place cargo on railroad cars or remove it from barges.

Since storage handling is an integral part of a terminal operator’s job, he needs to be able to operate forklifts to transport goods to storage areas.

Since terminal operators usually work outdoors, it is important for them to possess the ability to work in extreme weather conditions.

They also need to be physically dexterous and flexible.

• Use a variety of equipment such as bulldozers and forklifts to provide proper lifting, transporting, and storing products.

• Monitor loading and unloading of products and advise shift supervisors about safe operations.

• Ensure that terminal staff is aware of safety practices and protocols and that they follow them religiously.

• Align and set up tanks, pumps, and pipelines for product transfer purposes.

• Ensure that effective coordination prevails between terminal services and barges, railcars, and tank trucks.
• Assume responsibility for maintenance and repair of terminal loading racks and equipment.

• Maintain knowledge of industry terminal regulations and ensure that procedures are performed in accord with them.

• Create and maintain productive relationships with all members of the terminal.

• Respond to emergencies related to terminal, pipeline, rail, or marine-related issues.

• Maintain familiarity with terminal operations and act as a backup to lead terminal operators.

• Handle tank gauging activities and troubleshoot faulty terminal processes.
