Physician Assistant Job Description
Physicians are extremely busy professionals and need the support of assistants to help them work well.
Physician assistants are hired primarily to handle the many aspects of a physician’s work, which physicians do not have the time to manage. This may include taking patients’ medical histories, performing physical examinations, and handling insurance information.
They make reports on patients’ medical conditions for the physician’s review and make mental notes of any peculiarities that they may find in doing so, such as discrepancies in medical history or insurance information.
Assistants to physicians are eligible to order diagnostic tests and even administer laboratory tests in some instances.
They are trained enough to make preliminary diagnostics and create treatment plans for diseases or conditions that are within their medical jurisdiction.
Physician assistants working in hospital environments usually visit patients in their rooms to assess their conditions and provide physicians with heads on improvement.
In some circumstances, they can also provide input and support during surgeries done under local anesthesia.

• Assess patients’ physical and mental condition by interviewing them
• Take and record patients’ physical, psychological and social histories
• Create patient reports for the physician’s review and provide insight
• Assist in creating and implementing medical plans for each patient
• Implement emergency procedures during urgent circumstances
• Conduct follow up callbacks to patients who need continuous medical care
• Handle patient appointments in harmony with physicians’ schedules
• Examine patients for signs of disease, discomfort, or pain
• Ask pertinent questions about ailment to understand the problem
• Counsel patients and their families about the medical issues and their solutions

• Make sure that supplies and equipment for the physician’s office are in check at all times and order any out of stock items
• Provide support during surgical procedures involving local anesthesia
