Position Overview
Electricians install wires, fuses, and several other electrical components in houses, offices, and factories.
In some instances, they also install voice, data, and video wiring depending on their work settings.
Some electricians work in commercial buildings where their work is more complicated than that which they may handle in a house.
Job Requirements
The work of an electrician is high risk – they are always in danger of attaining burns and shocks.
That is why they need to be adequately trained before they take up their first electrical project.
Educational Requirements
You do not need to possess a formal degree to work as an electrician – a high school diploma or GED is sufficient – but you do need to be trained in your work.
Skills and Abilities
Electricians usually join companies as apprentices and learn the trade on the job.
Most states require electricians to be licensed – this ensures that electricians are familiar with electrical theories and local electrical and building codes.
It is also essential for electricians to be manually dexterous and possess a good sense of balance as they often work in hazardous locations.

• Answer calls for electrical repairing work
• Inquire into nature of the problem
• Take notes so that the problem can be understood properly
• Ask questions to determine the severity of the electrical problem
• Choose an array of tools and materials according to the repair work that needs to be done
• Confer with customers to determine their electrical repair needs
• Read and interpret blueprints and building schematics to understand how an electrical issue needs to be dealt with
• Follow architectural drawings to determine the installation of wiring systems
• Perform a number of duties to ensure proper maintenance and testing of wiring systems
• Replace faulty wires and parts and ensure that the new ones are in correct working order
