Position Overview
Pediatricians provide healthcare services to children, babies, and adolescents.
They treat many infectious childhood diseases and are required to be hands-on in handling pediatric emergencies as well.
They possess in-depth knowledge of how diseases and developmental disorders and their treatments affect children.
From the time a baby is born to his adolescence, pediatricians play a powerful role.
They administer vaccines to infants and provide new parents with information on how to handle them during the most sensitive years of their lives.
Position Requirements
Most pediatricians work in family health practices; many have pediatric clinics. They need to go through four years of college followed by medical school and eventually a residency.
The American Medical Association considers pediatrics to be a specialized field; pediatricians go through the entire rigmarole that a general practitioner goes through.
It is important for pediatricians to acquire certification through the American Board of Pediatrician.

• Greet young patients in a positive manner with a view to make them comfortable.
• Examine patients in order to diagnose diseases and disorders.
• Diagnose illnesses and conditions quickly and accurately.
• Assess children’s growth and development and ensure that all findings are logged properly.
• Engage parents in conversation to determine the onset of a disease or disorder.
• Prescribe or/and administer medication, vaccine, and therapy to young patients.
• Advise parents and guardians about their wards’ dietary, activity and hygiene needs.
• Treat children with minor, acute, and chronic health problems.
• Identify health and growth problems and provide parents with information on how to deal with them.
• Prescribe bloodwork and urine tests for patients and interpret results to understand diseases.
• Monitor patients’ conditions and reevaluate treatment plans as and when necessary.
• Plan and execute medical plans according to each individual patient’s needs and ensure that they are correctly implemented by hospital staff.
• Refer patients to specialists for management of diseases out of the scope of practice such as autoimmune diseases or speech development issues.
• Operate on patients in a bid to remove or improve the functioning of injured or diseased body organs or parts.
• Collect and record patient information including vitals and medical histories.
• Educate parents of premature babies by providing them with care information and emotional support.
• Remain on-call for medical emergencies and ensure that they are handled with sensitivity.
• Provide other physicians and/or specialists with consulting services.
