Return to Work Cover Letter Sample (How-to Write)

Updated on: January 7, 2022

Deciding to work after you have been at home for some time, or have not been able to find work, can be challenging.

Many thoughts may come to your mind, such as:

  1. What if no one will want to hire me after a career break?
  2. What if I lost my professional competencies in a new environment?
  3. What if the employer thinks that my skills are outdated?

All these are enough to demotivate you as a job seeker.

Do you know that there is really no need to worry?

Many people take time off from work for genuine reasons, including looking after young children or an ailing family member or simply to de-stress themselves.

Most employers are broadminded enough not to mind these things.

But it will work well for you only if you provide a valid reason for why you had no actual job for some years.

1. Give the Employer a Valid Reason

Be honest about what you were doing in the career break that kept you away. Whether it was motherhood, raising children, or just international travel.

Provide details so that the hiring manager can perceive your circumstances.

2. Show Your Energy and Enthusiasm

In your cover letter for a return to work resume, show them that you are even more energetic after a career pause.

3. Relate your Skills and Experiences

Relate your previous experiences and skills to the needs of the employer.

Here is an example to show you how this can be done:

Ms. Serena Williamson
Principal
Partnership Schools Community
302 Webster Street
Junction City, KS 66441

Dear Ms. Williamson:

After a short career pause of 2 years from the teaching profession to look after my newborn, I am ready to work as a full-time Teacher at the Partnership Schools Community.

During my career break, I completed my teacher training course. Through my training and real-life experiences, I grasped the teaching concepts even in more detail.

Specifically, I am highly skilled in the following areas:

❖ Curriculum Development
❖ Imaginative Presentation
❖ Positive Student Development
❖ Activities-based Learning
❖ Student Assessment and Evaluation
❖ Goals Establishment
❖ Guidance and Counseling
❖ Student Maturation Processes
❖ Advanced Instructional Methods

Owing to an amalgamation of previous teaching experience and certification in teaching methodologies, I believe that I am a good contender for a lead teacher position at your school. It would perhaps be best if we discussed this in detail, in person. Should you need to reach me, please call at (000) 854-8541.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I will call you after a few days to follow up.

Sincerely,

(Signature)
Janice Monroe
